Adolescent attitudes towards gambling

Buczkiewicz, M, Griffiths, M D, and Rigbye, J (2007) Adolescent Attitudes Towards Gambling: Some preliminary findings.

The authors of this report, from the International Gaming Research Unit, Nottingham Trent University, conducted a national survey of over 2,500 adolescents, mainly between the ages of 11 and 16 years old.

  • 66% of those surveyed play fruit machines at some point
  • 33% have played fruit machines in the last month
  • 10-20% are regular players - once a week
  • Between 3-6% are probably pathological gamblers
  • It is predominantly a problem amongst boys
  • 62% said the legal age for any form of gambling should be set at 18
  • The majority (68%) see gambling as a means to win money
