Sir Henry Brooke - chair of the Advisory
Commission
Sir Henry Brooke was a senior judge for 18
years before he retired as Vice-President of the Court of
Appeal last September. Among his non-judicial activities he
has been the chair of the Centre for Crime and Justice Studies
at King's College London, a member of the Advisory Council for
the Socio-Legal Studies Centre at Oxford, the chair of the
trustees of the British and Irish Legal Information Institute
(BAILII), the leading British free access legal website, and a
trustee (now fellow) of the Wordsworth Trust.
Although both his father and his brother served as Cabinet
Ministers, Sir Henry has not been involved in political activity
himself. He has often advised local authorities and central
Government during his time at the Bar.
Lord Victor Adebowale
Lord Victor Adebowale was awarded a CBE in the 2000 New Year
Honours List for services to the New Deal, the unemployed and
homeless young people. In 2001 Victor became one of the first group
of people to be appointed as people's peers.
Victor Adebowale is chief executive of Turning Point, the UK's
leading social care organisation, which works with people facing a
range of complex needs including substance misuse, mental health
problems and learning disabilities.
Lady Stratford Sally Banks
Sally Banks has lived and worked in Newham for
23 years. She was married to Lord Tony Banks, who was the MP
for Newham North West and West Ham from 1983 until 2005, and a
member of the House of Lords from June 2005 until his death in
January 2006. Sally has worked as a social worker and a
manager in child protection, adoption and fostering, mental
health, substance misuse and with older people in health and
social care in local government for 36 years.
Bill Galston OBE
Bill Galston is a former police officer and
joined the Gaming Board for Great Britain when it was formed
in 1970, retiring as the Board's chief inspector in 1996. He
is currently the managing director of Gambling Governance
Limited, a United Kingdom registered company specialising in
compliance services and corporate governance to the gambling
industry internationally.
Bernadette Marjoram
Bernadette Marjoram has worked in the public
sector for 30 years, including 20 years at chief executive and
director level. She also has experience in the community and
voluntary sector, holding a range of non-executive chairs and
directorships. She established her own company in 2002,
specialising in interim management and consultancy services to
the public sector.
Bernadette was honoured several times at the prestigious 43rd
Women of the Year awards for her contribution to urban and
community regeneration.
Lord Herman Ouseley
Lord Herman Ouseley was previously the
executive chairman of the Commission for Racial Equality
(1993-2000). Before that he was a local government officer for
some 30 years, serving as chief executive of the London
Borough of Lambeth as well as the former Inner London
Education Authority, where he was also previously a director
of education. He was knighted in 1997 for services to local
government and community relations in Great Britain.
Professor Tony Travers
Professor Tony Travers is director of the
Greater London Group, a research centre at the London School
of Economics. He has acted as an advisor to a number of House
of Commons select committees, notably for education and
skills. From 1992 to 1997 he was a member of the Audit
Commission and has been a Senior Associate of the King's Fund.
He has wide-ranging experience of the public sector and
published extensively on the subject. |
